What in the world does PTO do at CHS?
PTO supports a parent newsletter, the Greyhound Gazette, that is emailed five times a year. This great information resource starts with an article from Carmel Principal, Dr. Tom Harmas and the PTO President on what is happening and upcoming at CHS. This is going to be your best resource for information on registration, schedules, testing, school events, etc. The PTO also holds two information meetings for parents during registration week.
On the first Tuesday of each month, PTO holds a meeting at 9:00 a.m. in the Community Room. Each month CHS Principal Dr. Harmas and Counselor Mrs. Stephan provide detailed updates on what is happening at CHS. This is a great way to get the inside scoop directly from people in the know. Information discussed has varied, including topics such as Carmel School Board decisions, compliance with new state requirements, new ideas for scheduling or classes, the variety of programs offered for students and parents, testing schedules, assistance available, etc.
PTO organizes volunteers to help at CHS in a variety of ways. There are regular volunteers serving in the library, the attendance office, and the College and Career Counseling Center. Our general volunteers help throughout the year as needed. Examples include registration, yearbook/ID pictures, selling Prom tickets, greeters at different events, parent representative on different school committees, and supporting special requests from teachers.
PTO sponsors and runs the Homecoming Dance, held the Saturday after the Homecoming week. Students can come and dance in the Fieldhouse with a DJ, play cards or ping-pong in the Greyhound Cafeteria, or enjoy refreshments and hang out with their friends in the Freshman Cafeteria. Parent volunteers sell tickets during Spirit Week and volunteer at the event. This dance has great support and supervision of the CHS staff and teachers. This is also great way for both moms and dads to volunteer. The Homecoming Dance is the primary fundraiser event of the year for PTO.
The PTO Backpack Program serves students at CHS in need of extra nourishment over the weekends. Backpacks are packed by volunteers each Friday and distributed to the students thru the Counseling Center. Food donations are always needed.
The Scholastics Banquet is also organized by the PTO. Our top scholars are honored at this banquet, along with their parents and a teacher or coach mentor chosen by each student.
The PTO Hospitality Committee is involved throughout the school year. These are the ladies you will see serving lemonade at the fall Open House when you come to walk through your student’s schedule. The committee brings in treats for the staff at Homecoming, the end of the year and several other times during the school year to show appreciation for all their extra efforts with our students. The Hospitality Committee also holds a Staff Appreciation luncheon in the spring. Parents can volunteer to provide food or help serve.
The PTO has a Green Team representative. This helps parents learn about programs such as the electronic recycling events, the Carmel garden program, and other school programs for recycling and energy savings.
PTO membership fees support all of the events you have just read about. PTO also provides money for special items, such as a tea for the members of the Japanese exchange program when they are visiting the United States, a grant for the CHS Art Courtyard, and donations to scholarships. Any profits left over at the end of each year are provided to Mr. Williams for a discretionary fund to support CHS students.
CHS PTO would like to invite you to continue your support of the PTO in the Carmel School System. It is also a great way to volunteer – both to support our CHS students and staff and see CHS from the inside! You can sign up to join the PTO or volunteer from the PTO tab located on the CHS web site or directly at: http://www1.ccs.k12.in.us/chs/PTO
